Modern Lightweight Construction Can Rapidly Fail in a Fire, Injuring Residents & Firefighters
Fires burn quicker and are more deadly today. Contents in homes made of plastic and synthetic material that produce toxic, poisonous, and deadly smoke. Unprotected building materials, flooring and open floor plans cause fires to burn quickly. Emerging technology such as lithium-ion batteries also result in hot, fast and toxic fires. Flashover can occur in less than two minutes. That leaves little time for people in the home to escape.
Fire sprinklers are the only technology that can stop a fire from becoming deadly. Only the sprinkler closest to the fire activates from the heat of the fire. That allows time for residents to safely escape while firefighters arrive. That is why NFPA and ICC codes have included requirements to install fire sprinklers in all new one- and two-family homes for more than 15 years. Removing fire sprinklers from the codes allows substandard homes to be built, threatening Community Risk Reduction for decades
