Interactive Game Helps Fire Departments Teach Children About Fire Sprinklers

Is your fire department looking for new and exciting ways to teach children about fire safety? The Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC) has the solution with its Sprinkler Smarts website designed to teach children about fire sprinklers.

HFSC developed Sprinkler Smarts to assist fire departments with meeting the increasing need for fire sprinkler education for students. As more communities require fire sprinklers in new homes, more families will be protected; but they may also have questions about the technology. Sprinkler Smarts helps students understand the role fire sprinklers play in keeping families and their homes safe.

Sprinkler SmartsWith two sections, one intended for kindergarten through fifth graders and another section for junior high students, fire departments are able to reach children of all ages with their fire sprinkler education efforts. Sprinkler Smarts is filled with important safety information that helps children learn while they play fun, interactive games and complete quizzes and other activities.

Children in kindergarten through fifth grade are guided through the website by Captain Splash and the Drop-lettes. Students enjoy playing the “Monkey See, Monkey Tell!” game, which reinforces the importance of treating fire sprinklers as tools, not toys. Students can also become a “Fire Safety Scout” by gaining knowledge on fire prevention and correctly identifying smoke alarms and fire sprinklers.

Junior high students learn about fire sprinklers at the “Sprinkler Smarts Fire Safety Fair.” And, as with any fair, there are entertaining games. Students must build asmany fire sprinklers as they can in “Sprinkler Shuffle” to better understand how they work. “Sprinkler Circuits” is another challenging race against Sprinkler Smarts 6-8the clock that helps students learn how to engineer the water flow in a fire sprinkler system. The “Fact or Fiction Movie Theater” includes videos and animation segments that help complete activities and quizzes.

Sprinkler Smarts is not just for kids either. Fire departments can get parents involved at home by downloading fun activities that the whole family will enjoy together.

Don’t forget the special sections for fire departments, which provide downloads that can support and enhance local fire safety outreach.

Give it try and see how Sprinkler Smarts can supplement your fire department’s fire safety outreach in local schools. Sprinkler Smarts is free resource for fire departments and can be played by visiting www.SprinklerSmarts.org.
