HFSC has earned a generous 2009 Fire Prevention
and Safety Grant from the Grant Programs Directorate of the Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). With this new funding,
HFSC will be able to expand its efforts to support U.S. fire
departments that teach about fire sprinklers.
The centerpiece of the grant program is a national effort to increase use of live fire flashover and sprinkler demonstrations as local home fire safety educational tools.
100 Local Fire Departments will Benefit
HFSC will provide $1000 stipends to 100 U.S. fire departments selected from among those that demonstrate they can implement similar live fire and sprinkler educational events on their own within the required time frame, and fulfill the other eligibility requirements.
“This generous Grant funding will allow HFSC to encourage, inform and equip more local fire department educators so they can help their communities learn about home fire sprinkler systems,” says HFSC Chair Gary S. Keith. “The local fire service should take the lead role in home fire sprinkler education. Presenting live flashover and sprinkler demonstrations is an excellent way to raise awareness and drive home life-saving messages to people of all ages. We look forward to a lot of interest in this program from the fire service.”
