When Claire
Twomey, Habitat for Humanity Lakeland (Florida) executive director,
read about the availability of sprinkler systems for Habitat for
Humanity (HFH) homes, she knew she had to learn more. The Calloway
family was awaiting completion of their home. With eight people
in the family and one severely disabled adult child, a sprinkler
system could make the difference between life and death in case
of fire. Although the house was well under construction, Twomey
was determined to make this safety feature available to the family.
"Mrs. Calloway
is the primary caretaker for her son during the day," explains Twomey.
"If there were a fire and she was overcome by smoke, he would be
unable to save himself or call for help."
